Example of Artists in the Lead: Amelia Hutchison

“In the rest of the jail, E Section is famous for being ‘luxurious’ in comparison. Our students have more time outside their cells, board games in the common room, art and yoga classes… but along with those privileges comes the expectation that they will be a part of a more intentional community. They need to be for each other and for healthy rehabilitation…Every so often I will stand back and realize how surreal this place is. I think that real magic happens when art is made is unlikely places, but more importantly I think everyone involved is confronted with their common humanness.”

Imagine an entire prison system based on the values of E section.  What would it do to the recidivism rate?  What would it do for the overall health and well-being of young men of color?  What could we do to make this happen?

Calling All Artists to Lead Us Back to Peace

It’s time we understand that these 3 powerful forces can and must work together instead of against each other.  It’s time we understand how they work together.  Now is the time for this understanding because we are fed up and broke down.  Now is the time because we are longing for something else.  Now is the time because we desperately crave peace. Gratitude Activity: What Do Your Friends Teach You About You?

You can learn a lot about yourself and your own values by taking an assessment of your friends.  Here’s a quick activity for you today:

  • Give yourself a little time to think.  Gather all of your friends lives and put them together in your head.  If for some reason you can’t picture your friends in your head, no problem.  Just browse through your friends on Facebook.  Really focus on your good friends. The folks you choose to spend time with on a regular basis.  You can skip those Facebook “friends” who you met one time at a party or whatever.
  • What do your friends have in common?  What would you say if you had to sum your friends up in one overarching description?
  • Now, what comes up for you?  What does this overarching description tell you about your own life…your own values…your own choices?
  • Can you include yourself in this same overarching description? Do you feel lucky that you are part of this amazing group of friends doing what you consider to be amazing things?  Or, does it make you uncomfortable that you have made choices that are similar to your friends?  Do you wish you were making different choices?
  • If you notice that your life does not match this overarching description, ask yourself “why not?”  Do you have a longing to be more like your friends?  Or, are you someone who has grown apart from your friends and are looking for a new community to be a part of?

This is the week that we Americans all sit down and celebrate gratitude all at the same time.  I love this holiday.  It’s my absolute favorite.  And one reason is because I believe gratitude is a superpower that can help us transform any situation.  I believe that gratitude is the practice of celebrating your own gifts and celebrating the gifts in each other.  Our friends are gifts to be celebrated.  Some of us feel connected to and supported by our friends.  Others of us feel estranged.  Regardless, we can all feel grateful that we have a community of people who hold up that mirror before us – who allow us to stop and reflect so that we can continue to practice making the choices that will bring us to our best selves.

What Do You Do?

I don’t have a real job.  So, when someone asks me “What do you do?,” I kinda panic.  One of the primary reasons I started this blog was so that I could continue to put words to “what I do.”  Maybe I should try to only ever answer visually.  Perhaps, when folks ask, “So, what do you do?,” I can whip out a 4’x6′ postcard with this image and hand it to them…

Wordle: What Do You Do?

But, that might be weird.

We all know the traditional way to answer this question.  We are all supposed to have a profession.  “I am a doctor.” “I am a lawyer.”  “I am a firefighter.”  These are all great answers.  But this is problematic for me.  I could say…

  1. I am a theater teacher and director.” – However, I am rarely in the room with actors these days.  And when I am, I am rarely doing theater in the traditional sense.  When I am, I am helping folks, who do not identify as professional actors, practice being braver, more compassionate people.  I just use theater to do it.
  2. I am a business owner.” – However, then, of course, I have to explain what my business does and that is a whole other complicated web of description…one which I am working very hard to make simpler…especially because it is one of those businesses with a mission to do good and not just make money so I could also say…
  3. I am a social entrepreneur.” – Which I have on my business card and LinkedIn profile, but it feels funny to say it out loud for some reason.  It’s not one of those “doctor” or “lawyer”-type professions that conjures up an immediate image in the mind of the person you are talking to.

Maybe, I am being too modest.  Maybe, I am just not being bold and brave enough to say what it is I am truly here TO DO in the world.  Maybe the next time someone asks me, I will have the courage to answer:

I am a leader in a compassion revolution.  Theater is my tool.  I make plays with all kinds of regular folks that promote the  virtues we desperately crave and often neglect as humans.  I also build and inspire programs, organizations, and systems to support this revolution.

Is that too wordy?  Is it just too much to throw at someone over cocktails at a happy hour mixer?  Or, do I owe it to my work and my mission to tell the whole truth.

I don’t know.  You tell me.  What do YOU do?

For Veterans: Building Empathy towards Healing

I think Veterans should make plays.

A long time ago, I saw a piece on 60 minutes about Veteran’s coming home who were suffering from PTSD.  At least, I think it was 60 minutes.  If I could remember exactly, I would find the video and post it here.  The piece was focused on the lack of psychological services available at VA hospitals as well as the stigma around psychological care for veterans in general.  The piece showcased Veterans who had stories to tell and and were shocked and devastated that there were not enough people around who would listen.

I think Veterans should make plays. Continue reading

The Old Fashioned Do Gooder: Mad Men Moments in the Age of Social Innovation

Did you know that Rachel Maddow has a Cocktail Moment?  During this election season, I have become a huge fan of hers and, last night, for the first time, I watched as she ended her week by sharing one of her favorite cocktails with us.  My partner and I just sat there, eyes wide and mouths agape, as she poured a new spin on the Old Fashioned.

I knew I liked her before but last night made me realize that I have found my Soul Mate. Continue reading

It’s Always a Leadership Issue: Trickle Down vs. Bottom Up

Whether we describe them as “caring” or “ineffective” or “compassionate” or “strong” or “weak” or “just awful,” all leaders are in the position of deciding the fate of POWER and ENTITLEMENT in our organizations and communities.

Let me give you a couple of definitions that work for me:

POWER: The ability to act.  The force to get something done.

ENTITLEMENT: A guarantee offered by the community you are in that tells you you, just by the nature of being you, are part of that community.  I like to think of it as a “Welcome Home” sign at the front of the door. Continue reading
